Pele was voted the best athlete of the century by the Olympic committee because how talented and gifted Pele was as a soccer player. You would have to be pretty talented to get this award. It says on Goal.com “He was voted athlete of the century by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1999.This proves my topic sentence because it shows that Pele won best athlete of the century in 1999 which is probably the biggest award a person who plays sports could get and that he would have had to have scored a lot, be a good team member, and be fast and supple. Pele was the youngest player ever to win a world cup at 17 he also scored twice against the home team twice Sweden. It says on Goal.com “At 17, Pele became the youngest ever winner of a World Cup. He also scored twice in the final against home side Sweden.” This shows how Pele was very fast and agile because it shows that he is a really good soccer player who was the youngest to win a world cup which is a big accomplishment and he had to be pretty good to do that. As you can see Pele was a really fast and sharp soccer player who won many games and was a great player while he played.

In Nigeria the kids growing up would look up to Pele and all wanted to be like him in the 1980’s. Many kids growing up in Nigeria in the 1980s were born into the Pele age. Long before a certain Diego Maradona began to lay claim to the crown of greatness, Pele was the one footballer every kid wanted to be like. This proves my topic sentence because it shows how he didn’t just change soccer in the US he also changed it in Nigeria by everyone there looking up to him and wanting to be like him. As you can see Pele didn’t just change soccer in the US he did it all around the world and helped promote world friendship.
